Understanding Granite Finishes: Polished vs Leathered vs Flamed

“An architect's guide to specifying stone finishes for commercial DCOF friction criteria, tactile satin patinas, and exterior freeze-thaw resilience.”

When specifying natural granite for international architectural projects, surface finish determines not only light reflectivity and tactile sensation, but also critical safety parameters including wet Dynamic Coefficient of Friction (DCOF) and stain susceptibility.

Polished Finish: Achieved through sequential diamond grit abrasives up to 3,000 grit, producing a high-gloss crystalline reflection that accentuates the deep feldspar and quartz matrix. Recommended for primary vertical cladding, executive reception desks, and low-traffic interior statement surfaces.

Leathered (Satin) Finish: Created by brushing diamond-impregnated filament brushes across a pre-honed stone surface. The softer mineral components recede while dense quartz crystals remain raised, resulting in a subtle micro-textured patina that hides fingerprints and resists water-spotting.

Flamed Finish: High-temperature oxy-acetylene torching induces thermal shock, causing quartz crystals to pop and fissure on the face. This creates a rough, non-slip textured face meeting ANSI A326.3 wet DCOF > 0.60, essential for outdoor civic plazas, pool perimeters, and vehicular driveways.
